Sandwich generation stress

The “sandwich generation” is the generation “stuck in the middle” who have living parents and children.

More specifically, the term often refers to middle-aged people who support both their parents and their children, whether financially, physically or emotionally.

Over the past decade, the number of people simultaneously providing care for children and parents has grown. This is due not only to increasing survival in older ages but the postponement of childbirth due to forging careers and delays in transitioning into independence generally.

In the UK, about 3% of the population is providing care for more than one generation, whether in the same home or across multiple homes, according to the University of Southampton.

Overall, terms like “squeezed” express the heavy pressure on people juggling duties in all directions. The “sandwich generation” can often experience burnout, isolation and feelings of depression.

A common feeling is a guilt because it is so hard to find the time to be a good spouse, parent, and child simultaneously. Some have felt they have had no choice but to reduce their hours or give up work altogether, bringing financial stress, hobbies can fall to the wayside and relationships with family members suffer, but this does not have to be the case.

If this is something you are experiencing, we are here for you. At Great Park Homecare, we can help relieve the stress and grant you the peace of mind that your ageing parents are in safe hands with the following services:
